About Pookii

The Pookii Blog is a blog with a mission, a blog with passion, and a blog with stories. Our mission is to produce short films that explore true Asian American subjectivity  and identity through documenting real life stories of Asian Americans.

Some might question, why document mundane daily lives?

What many might not know is that the mainstream media today does not depict Asian Americans in fair light, that is, if they are depicted at all. Long standing stereotypes such as Yellow Peril, Model Minority, Dragon Lady, and more are still around today under the disguise of contemporary stories and characters. The overarching theme? Asians depicted as foreign, threatening, strange, exotic, etc. the list goes on. (Check out this website for more details)

The key word of our mission is HUMANIZING – Asians depicted as normal, everyday people, everyday humans. The immigration experience and the pursuit of the American dream are experiences that founded the very own country of the United States. These are also the sources of stories for Asian Americans. It’s an unique experience, but not something that should be estranged. I urge you as you read on the rest of this blog, think about these stories that never make it to the big screens, these are the everyday struggles and lives that makes up a good percentage of America today.

About the Name

The name “Pookii” derived from my personal nickname, “poosta” combined with my former blog partner’s actual name, “key”. I remember saying “Hey! We should call ourselves Pookii!” And she laughed at me explaining to me how pooki actually means the female genital in Tagalog. I thought about it briefly and exclaimed, “That’s even more perfect for our blog name!”

It’s Asian, it’s female, and that’s what this blog is about.

I never actually found the real way to spell “pookii” in Tagalog, so I’m hoping this light-hearted name won’t come off as offensive to anyone. Instead, I want to take this silly joke and make it into an empowering name for female Asian Americans. I mean, isn’t that what so many people has done with many terms used today? Who knows… the Pookii just might be the next big thing… :)
